SOJC Yearbook: Attracting Talent

The heart and soul of any school are its people. The SOJC is proud to be the academic home of some of the top advertising, journalism, media studies, and public relations students and faculty members in the nation. This year, we’ve added five notable researchers and teachers to our faculty. And we’re exploring new ways to find and attract talented undergraduate and grad students interested in journalism and communication.

Media and Social Action Academic Residential Community: Learning and Living Together

Last fall, the SOJC launched the Media and Social Action Academic Residential Community for first-year UO students who share an interest in communication and a passion for changing the world. The ARC’s first cohort of 28 students lived together in the new Kalapuya Ilihi residence hall. And in interdisciplinary classes, guest lectures, and field trips, they learned how to harness media to raise awareness, shape attitudes, and move people to meaningful action. Eighty-three percent of the 2017–18 ARC residents are now pursuing a major in Allen Hall.

SOJC Welcomes Five New Faculty Members

Meet Dayna, Amanda, Max, Dave, and Hollie. When they joined the SOJC family this fall, they added to our faculty expertise in intersectionality, social media data analytics, game studies, immersive media, and science communication. They’ve already become integral parts of our research community and our student academic success. We can’t wait to see what they do next.

JOURNALISTIC LEARNING INITIATIVE

Helping Middle Schoolers Succeed

Many of the skills journalists use—from reading and writing to researching and tapping expert sources—are the same abilities students need to succeed in school. That’s the philosophy behind the Journalistic Learning Initiative, a collaboration between the SOJC and the College of Education that’s already improving learning outcomes. And thanks to a generous $500,000 gift from Nancy and Dave Petrone, the program is expanding across the West Coast.

Next Generation Storytelling: High School Students Test-Drive College Life

In high school, it’s hard to know what you want to do with your life. Our weeklong summer program can help high school students who love storytelling build skills and reveal exciting career paths in advertising, journalism, public relations, and media. This year, 64 students from 10 states got the full university experience, staying in UO dorms while taking college-level classes from SOJC professors and industry professionals.
