Video Production Microcredential
Master the art of visual storytelling with this 12-credit graduate certification. Designed for journalists, content creators, and nonprofit professionals, this program builds foundational and advanced skills in:
- Camera operation
- Lighting
- Video shooting and editing
- Documentary and visual storytelling
Whether you're in a newsroom, a creative agency, or launching your own project, this microcredential gives you practical, portfolio-worthy experience.
How It Works
Earn your Video Production Microcredential by completing 12 credits from the UO Multimedia Storytelling Master’s program in Portland. Courses start in the fall and can be:
- Completed in 9 months (Sept–June)
or - Spread out to fit your schedule
Best of all, your credits can fully transfer toward a Master’s in Multimedia Storytelling from the UO School of Journalism and Communication.

Community Podcasting Microcredential
Audio storytelling is more powerful than ever. This 12-credit, graduate-level certification helps you build professional skills in podcasting, interviewing, and audio production to tell meaningful community stories.

- Aspiring podcasters and community storytellers
You’ll learn how to create and publish impactful audio content designed to elevate underrepresented voices.
How It Works
Complete just 12 credits from the UO School of Journalism and Communication's Multimedia Storytelling Master's program in Portland to earn your certification. All courses can be:
- Taken over one academic year (September–June)
or - Spread out to fit your availability
All 12 credits apply directly to the Master’s in Multimedia Storytelling if you continue your studies.

- JCOM 630 Topics: Audio I (2 credits, fall term)
- JCOM 630 Topics: Audio II (4 credits, winter term)
- JCOM 637 Community Listening (2 credits, winter term)
- JCOM 638 Community Voices (4 credits, spring term)
There are no electives for this track—every course is designed to build a robust, hands-on podcasting portfolio.
How to Apply
DEADLINE: August 15, 2025, for fall 2025 start
STEP 1:
Gather your info. You’ll need:
- General Info: Just the basics—name and contact info, residency status, and education level.
- Unofficial Transcripts: Upload PDFs of your unofficial transcripts to the online application.
- Personal Statement: Describe your professional goals and aspirations, including how this program will help you achieve them. Tell us what you hope to gain from the program beyond the credential itself.
- Resumé or CV: We want to see what you’ve been up to in your academic and professional life. Your resume or CV highlights the skills and abilities you have acquired through your education and work experiences.
- Portfolio: We want to see what you’re capable of. Please share one to three samples in any medium that represent your best work.
- English Language Proficiency: If English is not your native/primary language, you will need to prove proficiency through one of these three methods:
- TOEFL Score: Minimum score of 600 (paper test) or 100 (online test)
- IELTS Score: Minimum Academic score of 7.0 overall band
- Degree from English-Speaking Country: Submit transcripts proving you have received a bachelor’s degree or higher from a regionally accredited U.S. institution or an institution in Australia, Canada (excluding Quebec), Ireland, New Zealand, or the United Kingdom.
STEP 2:
Fill out the online graduate application on GradWeb. The form has two parts: the UO Graduate School application and the SOJC’s graduate application.
STEP 3:
Check the status of your application. After applying, you can review the status of your application anytime through our online application system. Admissions decisions are typically made within four weeks of the application deadline.
