Biography

Ivan Miller is a visiting professor of practice in sports journalism. Miller’s sports interests range from covering local sports to mountaineering. He is passionate about experiential learning, immersive and participatory journalism, and teaching leadership.

Operating out of the University of Oregon’s School of Journalism and Communication (SOJC), Miller worked with students to create an award-winning sports magazine, Ascend, an 11x14, 124-page publication that could forever live on a coffee table. Ascend blends both traditional and outdoor sports, capturing incredible stories of University of Oregon athletes but also top athletes and outdoor personalities across the world. Focusing on in-depth reporting, writers pushed the boundaries of traditional sports journalism while crafting timeless longform stories and pairing them with stunning photography and design.

Miller returned to the SOJC in 2024 to teach Reporting II and Advanced Story Development as a pro tem instructor. As a graduate student at the SOJC in 2006, Miller worked professionally as a sports reporter and earned an award for best sports story in the state. After earning some national acclaim for his newspaper reporting, Miller landed at Outside magazine, where he worked with some of the best editors and writers in the industry.

For 12 years Miller taught multiple college classes (Newswriting J216, Writing 121, and Writing 122) at Springfield High School in Springfield, Oregon. In 2014, he created the Miller Integrated Nature Experience and in nine years raised over $200,000 to take a diverse group of students on outdoor expeditions across Oregon to teach journalistic reporting, wilderness skills, and leadership.

Miller and his students created Backcountry Review magazine, which earned five Pacemaker awards, the National Scholastic Press Association’s top honor for best specialty magazine in the United States. Miller often coordinated with PR representatives, managers, publicists, and professional photographers to help students report on some of the top outdoor personalities from around the world, including best-selling author Richard Louv, environmentalist Winona LaDuke, and climbers Conrad Anker and Adam Ondra.
