Minors

The UO School of Journalism and Communication offers four minors: Documentary Film Production, Game Studies, Media Studies, and Science Communication. SOJC minors are open to undergraduates across the university, whatever your major.

For students outside the SOJC, a minor is a way to add media and communication skills to your degree. For SOJC majors, completing a minor is part of the major itself, and you can choose one of ours or minor in another subject at the UO.

Documentary Film Production Minor →

The documentary minor will help you add hands-on, nonfiction storytelling skills to any UO major so you can document and share the human experience. You'll build skills in research, pre-production, shooting, and editing; and learn the history of the documentary film industry.

Game Studies Minor →

Open to any UO major, this interdisciplinary minor gives you an edge on the growing interactive media industry by exploring the intersections of video and other types of games with technology, psychology, and culture. You'll explore the theories, methodologies, subjects, and practices you’ll need to understand gaming and the game industry.

Media Studies Minor →

Designed for students outside the SOJC, the media studies minor offers a broad look at how media and mass communication shape the world. You'll examine the latest trends in media and determine their effects on society while you build research and analytical skills. The media studies minor’s flexible structure lets you fit it around almost any major (except for the Media Studies major).

Science Communication Minor →

The science communication minor helps you translate complex research for public audiences, drawing on the SOJC's long experience in science and environmental communication. It's open to students across the university and pairs especially well with a science major.

Minors and Your SOJC Degree

Every SOJC undergraduate completes at least one minor as part of the major. You can satisfy the requirement three ways:

  • An SOJC minor (24 credits), one of the four above
  • Another UO minor (24–40 credits) in any subject
  • A second UO major (36 or more credits)

If you minor within the SOJC, only one JCOM course can count toward both your major and your minor.

The SOJC's Undergraduate Student Success Center combines career and academic advising in one office. Our advisors are available year-round, in person and remotely, to answer questions and give advice about everything related to your degree, including course requirements, internships, career paths, and more. All SOJC undergraduates are welcome, even if you haven't enrolled yet.
