2021 Eric Allen Outstanding Young Alum

Ryan Knutson

Ryan Knutson is a news editor and co-host of The Journal, the flagship daily news podcast from The Wall Street Journal and Gimlet Media. He graduated from UO School of Journalism and Communication in 2009. Knutson became the youngest ever editor-in-chief of the Oregon Daily Emerald as a sophomore at the UO. After and during college, he held a series of internships, including at The Oregonian, OPB radio, The Daily Graphic of Ghana, and ProPublica.

Knutson landed at PBS Frontline from 2010 through 2013. At Frontline, Ryan led an investigative project in partnership with ProPublica on the cell tower industry that was nominated for an Emmy. In 2013, he went back to newspapers as the telecom reporter at the Wall Street Journal.

In 2018, Knutson switched to the business side of the Wall Street Journal’s parent company, Dow Jones, but he couldn't stay away from the newsroom for long. In 2019, after just over a year on the business side, he returned to the newsroom to co-host a new, daily narrative podcast called The Journal.
