Biography

Oscar Johnson Boakye is a Ghanaian communication scholar with a strong background in public relations, health communication, and strategic media engagement. He holds a BA in communication studies (public relations) and an MBA in marketing from the University of Ghana, where his research explored corporate identity and health service delivery in Ghanaian hospitals. He also earned an MA in biblical studies from SUM Bible College & Theological Seminary in California and a diploma in French language and civilization from Nantes University in France.

Oscar’s academic and professional journey is deeply informed by his early life experiences in Ghana, where traditional beliefs often hindered access to modern healthcare. This inspired his commitment to using communication as a tool for public health education and advocacy. For over a decade, he served as deputy head of public relations at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Ghana’s premier medical institution. In this role, he led media relations, developed institutional communication strategies, and coordinated public health campaigns on issues such as cancer awareness, kidney and heart disease, and COVID-19 prevention.

His research interests include health communication, strategic communication, public relations, crisis communication, and culturally informed approaches to health messaging. He is particularly interested in the role of strategic communication in addressing health disparities in sub-Saharan Africa, with a current focus on prostate cancer awareness in Ghana.

Oscar is fluent in English and Twi, with intermediate proficiency in French and Fante. He brings to academia a wealth of professional experience, a multicultural perspective, and a deep commitment to advancing health equity through research, teaching, and policy engagement.
