Biography

Will Yurman is a lecturer in the SOJC at the University of Oregon where he teaches journalism classes in writing and visual and audio storytelling. He is also the interim director of the Journalism Masters Program

 Will worked as a photojournalist for more than 30 years in locations ranging from Jerusalem to Juneau, Alaska to Buffalo, New York. His work evolved from still photography to include video and multimedia storytelling.

He spent 16 years as a staff photographer at the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle covering daily life as well as long-term projects including stories on education, homicide and Rochester’s large Deaf community. He spent three years based in Jerusalem covering news for newspapers and magazines around the world.

His journalism work has been recognized by the National Press Photographer’s Association, the Pictures of the Year International competition, and the Northern Shortcourse and his films have won awards in multiple film festivals.

For eleven years prior to coming to the UO in 2022, he taught in the journalism department in the Donald P. Bellisario College of Communications at Penn State in State College, Pennsylvania.
