Student Organizations & Opportunities

SOJC students can participate in more than 25 student groups ranging from student-run agencies and publications to UO chapters of national organizations. Joining a student organization is a great way to get professional development, add professional-level work to your portfolio, engage in hands-on learning, and network with leaders in your field. Ad Team

Ad Team is a competitively selected class that emulates a small advertising agency. The group participates regularly in regional and national ad competitions, including the National Student Advertising Competition. Contact advertising faculty for more information. Students selected for Ad Team take J459: Advanced Advertising Campaigns for 5 credits.

Align Magazine

Align is an arts and culture platform with an emphasis on lifestyle and fashion. This platform fosters creativity with three issues per academic year, consistent blog posts, rockin’ playlists, and developing mediums. Creative risks and experimental processes are encouraged in order to achieve original content. Align continues to grow and conceptualize as a platform that aims to highlight many forms of art and experiment with new ideas.

Allen Hall Advertising

Allen Hall Advertising (AHA) is a full-service, student-run advertising agency comprised of roughly 60 UO students. Teams work on multiple accounts throughout the year to produce professional-level work for real-world clients. AHA staff have the opportunity to gain true hands-on advertising experience and work with a large variety of clients. Students must apply for membership.

Allen Hall Public Relations

Allen Hall Public Relations (AHPR) is a full-service, student-run PR firm founded in 2000. Agency members construct and implement public relations campaigns to maximize results for small businesses and nonprofits in the Eugene area. Approximately 50–75 SOJC students work each term, which has grown due to its great results and client referrals. Our members offer diverse skill sets, with specialties ranging from public relations to marketing, advertising, electronic media, and graphic design. Students must apply for membership.

Bateman Case Study Competition

The Bateman Case Study Competition is the Public Relations Student Society of America’s (PRSSA) premier national case study competition for public relations students. It’s an opportunity to apply knowledge gained in the classroom and skills built during internships to the creation and implementation of a full public relations campaign. The Daily Emerald

The Daily Emerald is an award-winning newsroom that publishes a weekly newspaper and DailyEmerald.com, a real-time, 24/7 news website. With a focus on investigative reporting, campus news coverage, and community features, the Daily Emerald staff works hard to keep the university community informed about the day’s happenings and the issues that affect students every day. The newsroom—part of Emerald Media Group, an independent, student-run media business in Eugene—employs about 100 student reporters, editors, designers, photographers, and web developers. DuckTV

DuckTV is the UO’s premier student-run television network, comprised of more than 100 students. We produce creative entertainment television and cover local news and sports. The students are in charge of editing, filming, writing, acting, directing, producing, advertising, social media, and more. DuckTV is a great place to gain valuable portfolio work while receiving hands-on training in a cooperative environment. Students must audition for entry.

Emerald Advertising & Marketing produces more than $600,000 in sales through print and digital advertising and other marketing services for Emerald Media Group, an independent, student-run media business in Eugene. Student account executive assistants work with EMG Account Executives learn sales, build media plans, and do account planning.

Emerald Studios is Emerald Media Group’s advertising and marketing video production department. Emerald Studios creates promotional videos, mini-docs, and custom video projects for UO departments, student groups, and small local businesses.

Ethos Magazine

Ethos magazine is a nationally recognized, award-winning, independent, student-run publication. Since its inception as Korean Ducks Magazine in 2005, Ethos has worked hard to share a campus cultural spirit with its readership throughout the UO and the Eugene community. Flux Magazine

Flux is the SOJC’s award-winning flagship publication. The annual magazine covers a different theme each year and features stories about people and places in the Pacific Northwest. The staff typically includes 25–30 students, who perform such roles as editor, feature writer, designer, photographer, and videographer. Students gain hands-on experience reporting and producing multimedia feature stories in the field and add an award-winning print publication to their portfolio. Students must apply, and if accepted, they must register for J575 Flux Production for 1–5 credits in winter and spring term.

IR Futures

IR Futures is a student organization focused on business and financial communications. The group investigates emerging trends in corporate and financial public relations, investor relations, issues management, and public affairs. Members attend monthly meetings, sponsor workshops, and volunteer their time to broaden student understanding of the capital markets and personal finance issues that impact the community. We invite distinguished speakers from the financial sector to campus to facilitate an exchange of ideas and foster professional development among members. IR Futures is one of a small number of student investor relations organizations in the nation.

KWVA 88.1 FM

The KWVA student-run radio station is a voice for students and a place to gain broadcast, production, and operation experience in a hands-on broadcast facility. Volunteer student and community on-air personalities program their own shows over FM radio and streamed on the internet, including music, sports, news, and talk programming.

The UO student chapter of the National Press Photographers Association (NPPA) is dedicated to visual journalism and its advancement, creation, practice, training, editing, and distribution in all news media. OR Magazine

OR Magazine is an innovative, interactive, student-produced digital magazine designed for the web and mobile devices. The award-winning annual publication features stories about Oregon’s intriguing people and eclectic culture. The staff typically includes 20 students who serve as co-editors, writers, photographers, designers, and videographers. All students gain hands-on experience reporting and producing multimedia feature stories in the field. OR Magazine is offered every spring term and requires instructor consent. Students register for J469 for 4 credits.
