The Advertising major (J:AD) is built upon the Creative Strategist model. Our students learn and develop critical, conceptual and creative skills to solve problems responsibly for people and brands in a global economy. Our graduates are leaders in creative and strategic fields in leading global agencies, client corporations, and non-profit organizations.
Advertising courses underscore the necessity for curiosity, strategic and design thinking, and brand responsibility.
Our program uses project and experiential learning as a key contributor to student success. Advertising students have opportunities to join the NYC Experience, the annual weeklong trip to New York agencies, media outlets, and social change organizations like the Clinton Global Initiative.
Regular interactions with Portland agencies — Wieden & Kennedy, Uncorked Studios, AKQA, North, Mutt Industries, and Swift —and brand leaders such as Nike, Columbia, and Leatherman make brand development approaches real. Digital production classes produce work often cited as best examples by Adobe in their design conferences.
Creative strategists also participate in Science & Memory, a climate change reporting project that spans Oregon, Alaska and the Pacific Northwest.
Other opportunities include the Sports Media Workshop, portfolio reviews for creatives and strategists in Portland and New York, agency trips and job shadowing in Los Angeles and San Francisco, and international opportunities in Ghana, Cuba, and Austria.
Current student organizations in Advertising include the NSAC Ad Team, Ad Society and Allen Hall Advertising, a student advertising agency. Select Advertising students can become part of the Honors Program, a rigorous program dedicated to undergraduate research.
Advertising graduates start careers in top-ranked agencies and brand organizations. In 2014, grads took starting positions at places like Nike, 72 and Sunny, RGA, Wieden & Kennedy, AKQA, Swift, Mutt Industries, Horizon Media, PhD Media, and @radical media. To build these important relationships, we regularly invite industry leaders to teach workshops, speak on trending topics, and guide project work.
Our Advertising faculty are leading scholars and practitioners, strategists and producers who believe in bettering the profession and the world. Our mission is to build the leading program for those ready to be creative and courageous leaders in the age of ideas.
