Undergraduate Student Success Center

A team of nine women stand outside Allen Hall on the University of Oregon campus.The Student Success Center is a one-stop, integrated career and academic advising office for current and prospective undergraduate School of Journalism and Communication students.

Drop-In Advising:

Drop-in conversation are usually 10-15 minutes. Drop-in conversations are great for:

  • Registration advising
  • Understanding requirements/degree guide
  • Senior (one-year) grad plans
  • Checking out majors/minors
  • Explore study abroad, experiential learning, getting involved, etc.
  • Discussing internship credits
  • And any other question you can think of!

We open the drop-in list about 15 minutes before the start of each time block. We normally allow students to log in up to 15 minutes before the end of the time block. However, if the line is too long, we will close the list before the posted timeframe.

Week 10 & Finals Week (March 11-22):

  • Monday: 1:30-4:30 p.m.
  • Tuesday: 10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.
  • Wednesday: 10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.
  • Thursday: 1:30-4:30 p.m.

Spring Break (March 25-29):

  • Monday – Friday
  • 1:30-3:30 p.m.

All drop-in hours are first-come, first-served. Both remote (phone or video chat) and in-person options are available. During the times above, use the button below to initiate a live chat with our front desk staff through Microsoft Teams.

  • This initial chat window is public. Ask to join the drop-in line by writing a message to the chat and our team member will initiate a private chat conversation with you to get your student ID number.

Advising Appointments (remote or in person):

Appointment slots are available through the Navigate app. You have the option of in-person or remote appointment time slots. If you cannot get the app to work, call our front desk at 541-346-2884 or visit 134 Allen Hall.

Appointments are great for:

  • Two- or three-year graduation plans (Seniors, if you need a one-year grad plan, come see us during drop-in hours!)
  • Resume/cover letter strategies and techniques
  • Career (jobs/internships) advising and exploration
  • Multi-topic conversations
  • For everything else, use our drop-in hours!

How to use the Navigate app:

  1. Open the Navigate app and log in with your Duck ID.
  2. *Appointments – Schedule an Appointment
    • Select “School of Journalism and Communication”
  3. Select the topic of your appointment
    • Select either “Academic Advising SOJC” or “Career Advising SOJC”
      • Select “Academic Advising SOJC” for “grad plan” appointments, applying/petitioning for full major admission, college success strategies, etc.
      • Select “Career Advising SOJC” for career exploration conversations, ideas to gain experience/get involved in student organizations, resume/cover letter creation/review, job/internship search strategies, interviewing prep/practice, etc.
  4. Select “Find an Available Time”
    • This defaults to the current date but you can select a specific date.
  5. Select meeting type and team member
  6. Input your phone number and the reason for your appointment
  7. Indicate if you would like text reminders
  8. Select “Confirm Appointment”
  9. PRO TIP: Email and drop-in hours are the quickest way to connect with an SOJC advisor. Don’t wait days (or sometimes even a couple of weeks) for an appointment, if you don’t have to.

Note: All members of the student services team, with the exception of Senior Director Sally Garner, are Assisting Employees: We will direct students who are not minors and who report prohibited discrimination, including sexual harassment and violence to us to resources to help them and will report to the Office of Investigations and Civil Rights Compliance only when requested by the student (unless someone is in imminent risk of serious harm).

We do, however, have a duty to report child abuse and neglect to the Oregon Department of Human Services or law enforcement when there is reasonable cause to believe that child abuse or neglect has occurred. A child is any person under the age of 18.

Senior Director Sally Garner is a Designated Reporter. She is required to report all incidents of prohibited discrimination and harassment including sexual harassment and violence that she learns about to the Office of Investigations and Civil Rights Compliance. She will also direct students to resources to help them.

Additionally, Senior Director Sally Garner and Associate Director Rachel Allen are Campus Security Authorities (CSA). Under the Campus Clery Act, they are obligated to record any crimes disclosed to them.
