Meredith L. Morgoch is a Ph.D. candidate in media studies and a social science graduate student researcher for the US Geological Survey. Morgoch’s research primarily uses experimental design to investigate how social and physical characteristics influence individual risk and hazard message perceptions, attitudes, and behavioral intentions. More specifically, she studies an earthquake early warning system’s messaging that promotes protective actions and how efficacy-based language may be used to better influence vulnerable publics stakeholder engagement. Morgoch’s motivation for her research is to bridge the gap between theory and practice by putting forth research that is theoretically grounded and informs strategic communication recommendations for public relations campaigns targeted at socioeconomically diverse and regionally distinctive populations who reside in at-risk vicinities. Morgoch’s work in the areas of public relations, citizen agentry, risk, hazard, and science communication has been published in peer-reviewed journals including Public Relations Review, Journal of Contingencies and Crisis Management, and Journalism Practice, Frontiers in Communication, Iowa Journal of Communication, and the Carolina Communication Annual.
