Biography

Courtney is originally from Miami, Florida and uses she/they pronouns equally and interchangeably.

She received her BS from Florida State University in Media/Communication studies, where she also volunteered at the college radio station and began as a research assistant for media ethics projects. She then attended the University of Amsterdam where she conducted research on everything from economics journalism to sports to political satire, primarily through quantitative methods. Here, she taught two terms of persuasive communication. Courtney's thesis, which she presented at the 2019 ICA conference in DC, used both a content analysis and three comparative surveys to examine the measurements of gender and ethnicity in academic papers about news consumption. During this time, Courtney worked odd jobs in production (assistant food stylist), the theme park industry, and the health & wellness industry.

Now, Courtney focuses on the media's role in the US criminal justice system, with a particular interest in prisons. She is presently a GE for Writing for Communicators and is working as an editorial assistant to Dr. Regina Lawrence for the journal Political Communication.
