Courtney Hunt Munther has taught public relations at the University of Oregon, with a focus on strategic writing and nonprofit communication, since 2014.
With colleague Lori Shontz, she launched and co-directs Writing Central, the School of Journalism and Communication’s innovative peer writing program.
Prior to teaching, she worked as a beat reporter for a start-up daily newspaper in Eureka, California, before becoming a features editor for the education and business sections.
She then spent seven years in public relations at St. Joseph Hospital and Redwood Memorial Hospital, now part of Providence St. Joseph Health based in Irvine, California. As the communications specialist, she served as the lead writer and media spokesperson, working directly in media relations, crisis communication, internal and community relations, and strategic planning.
Later, she spent several years working in donor relations – the highlight of her experience in public relations. In this role, she developed donor cultivation programs and solicitation materials, coordinated small and large-scale fundraising events, and worked with a phenomenal team of people who stoked her passion for nonprofit development.
On the side, she also taught courses in introductory public relations and advanced public relations principles at Humboldt State University.
