Group Assignment Two (125pts)

Answer the following questions in 3-4 typewritten pages. Be sure your group members and group number are listed on your assignment. The purpose of this assignment is to help your group develop an analysis model of its own for "reading" media "texts" (for a defintion of "text" see Downing's glossary or Campbell page 428-29).
- Identify the "text" your group will read. Keep it simple. For instance, the opening sequence for "N.Y.P.D. Blue" as opposed to an entire episode or the whole series. Advertisements are a good solid choice for many groups.
- Summarize the Campbell reading "Critiquing Media and Culture" on pages 25-30. Revise his four-step model for criticism drawing on readings from Week Four. Be sure to address the usefulness of semiotics to the critique process as well as the ideas of "myth" (see Campbell pages 325-326) and "social semiotic" (the Chandler readings on "semtiotics" from the web). Refere to study terms, where useful, in preparing your revision.
