...and you thought all you had to do was be brilliant, talented and creative. It turns out you also have to be VISIBLE.
Learn why raising your visibility, creating a platform -- bringing you and your work in front of a wider audience -- is a vital skill for those negotiating a place in today's media landscape. This workshop takes a sophisticated look at even the simplest strategies, offers wisdom from the world of branding and delves into the maelstrom of social media. Veterans and newcomers alike, the steadily employed and the hungry freelancer, journalists practicing their craft in a diversity of media -- all will get a crash course in platform building and leave with a do-able to-do list.
Workshop leader is Lauren Kessler, author of twelve books, an award-winning immersion journalist, national speaker, enthusiastic blogger, recalcitrant tweeter and director of the Portland-based master's program in Multimedia Journalism.
The three-hour Saturday morning session is a quick overview of what platform building entails. It's non-credit...basically designed for Portland-area working journalists. But...It also acts as a morning intro to/ set-up for the two-day workshop that is designed for those entering the MMJ program, considering the program or part of the other master's program we operate in Portland in Strategic Communication.
The three-hr session presents a list of what is involved in platform building. The full workshop shows you how to do it. The full workshop will include presentations by specialists in self-branding and the use of social media and will delve into websites and blogsites from both a content and design perspective. The two-day workshop carries two graduate credits that are transferable into the MMJ program and "count" for one of the workshops that are part of that curriculum.
