THE GEORGE S. TURNBULL PORTLAND CENTER
"Where Thinking Becomes Doing"

The George S. Turnbull Center is an incubator for innovative ideas about the future of journalism and strategic communications. It is a forum where communication educators, students, researchers, practitioners, and citizens mix. It is a busy public square, a meeting place that inspires fresh thinking and pioneering practice.

Turnbull programs are intellectually inspirational and relentlessly practical, preparing students to move from the classroom to the working world, helping professionals hone skills and retool for the future, and educating citizens in the kind of effective media use that nourishes democracy.

Activities at the center reflect the unique characteristics of Portland culture while serving as a portal to the global community of communicators.  And, like the city it calls home, Turnbull is a place where independent thinking, entrepreneurial spirit, and cultural quirkiness come together in exciting and unexpected ways.

Turnbull Center activities and programs include:

*    Top-flight master’s programs in multimedia narrative journalism and in strategic communication that challenge professionals to think creativity, act ethically, and produce extraordinary work.
*    Undergraduate programs that connect students to real-world experiences in the Portland professional community.
*    Panels, talks, luncheons, workshops, and other events that bring journalists, strategic communicators, entrepreneurs, policymakers, and others together to learn from one another.
*    Public events that spark conversation, debate – and action – about the issues, practices and performance of today’s media.
