General advice for transfer and post-baccalaureate (second bachelor’s degree) students

  • Your first step is to get admitted to the University of Oregon. Consult the Office of Admissions for information on transfer requirements, deadlines, applications and transfer equivalencies.
  • Transfer students and second bachelor’s degree students must meet all applicable university general-education and major requirements. Consult your journalism adviser to determine how your transfer credits or first degree factor into these requirements.
  • If offered, transfer (juniors or seniors) and second bachelor’s pre-journalism majors should consider taking a Transfer Seminar.
  • Decide whether you want a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science degree. You may want to include mathematics/computer science or foreign language in your first term. Transfer students may complete these courses at another institution. Second bachelor’s degree students must meet current UO requirements for the Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree. These students should verify their standing in regard to these requirements with the Office of the Registrar.
  • Transfer students should also consider university group requirements—Arts & Letters (>1), Social Science (>2) and Science (>3). (Second bachelor’s degree students’ group requirements are fulfilled by their first bachelor’s degree.) If you have not finished your Writing Composition (WR) requirement, you should do that as soon as possible.
  • Remember, you need 16 credits in literature, eight credits in history, eight credits in economics, and eight credits in three additional blocks from the College of Arts and Sciences. These courses may be completed at a community college. However, if you still needed, transfer students are encouraged to consider upper-division courses in literature and history. Consult a journalism adviser about applying transfer credit or credit earned for the first degree toward these requirements.
  • You must complete all lower-division journalism requirements and be admitted to full major status in the school before you will be allowed to enroll in upper-division professional courses.
    • For students who declared "pre-journalism" as a major Fall 2009 or later: The school’s policy is to make available to you all the major courses you need within two academic years after you have completed the Gateway to Media series.
    • For students who declared "pre-journalism" as a major before Fall 2009: The school’s policy is to make available to you all the major courses you need within two academic years after you have been admitted to full major status.

Coming from a semester school?
The University of Oregon is on the quarter system. The three main terms (fall, winter, spring) run from late September to mid-June. See below for a complete academic calendar. Some things to keep in mind:

  • Each semester credit is equivalent to 1.5 quarter credits. A 3-credit semester class will transfer as a 4.5-credit class.
  • A “full load” here is four classes (15 or 16 credits). You need at least 12 credits (three classes) to be full time. Five academic classes a term is a heavy load and isn’t recommended.
  • Be prepared to “hit the ground running.” Deadlines, quizzes, midterm exams, etc. come around very quickly. It is easy to fall behind.
