The philosophy of the program is that public relations practitioners must be versed in all the diverse communication specialties. Majors are therefore advised to take appropriate course work in other fields, as well as related studies in other schools and departments, from business to sociology. Student organizations include Allen Hall Public Relations (AHPR) and Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA).

   b)  J440 Public Relations Writing* (Prereq: JPR standing, J350)

   c)  J452 Advanced Public Relations Writing* (Prereq: J440)

   d)  J453 Public Relations Planning and Problems* (Prereq: J440)

   e)  J454 Public Relations Campaigns  (Prereq: J453)

*Effective Fall 2009, these courses have new titles. The course numbers and prerequisites remain the same. If you have taken these courses under the "old" title, they still count toward the new requirement. You do not need to repeat the course.

J440 Public Relations Writing => J440 Strategic Writing & Media Relations

J452 Advanced Public Relations Writing => J452 Strategic Public Relations Communication

J453 Public Relations Planning and Problems => J453 Strategic Planning and Cases

Things you should know about this major:

  1. It is not possible to complete this major in one year.
  2. J440, J452, J453 and J454 are offered every fall, winter and spring.
  3. You may take J350 Principles of Public Relations while you are a premajor. However, you should probably wait until you are at least a sophomore before taking the class. You should also take J201 before you take this class. J350 is typically offered in the fall and spring.
  4. J350 is a prerequisite for J440 and they may not be taken together.
  5. J440 is a prerequisite for J452 and they may not be taken together.
  6. J440 is a prerequisite for J453 and they may not be taken together.
  7. J453 is a prerequisite for J454 and they may not be taken together.
  8. You are encouraged to take J452 and J453 together but may also take them separately.
  9. You may take J452 and J454 together but should take them in separate terms, if you can.
