Premajor Journalism Courses

You must complete a number of premajor ("core") courses before you apply for full major status in the school. Students are advised to complete these premajor classes as soon as possible.

Students who declared "pre-journalism" as their major Fall 2009 or later must complete three premajor courses:

  • J100 Media Professions
  • J101 Grammar for Communicators
  • J201 Media and Society
  • Students must also complete the university's writing composition requirement before applying for full major status. (Students in the Robert D. Clark Honors College are exempt from this.)
  • Effective Fall 2011, the three pre-major courses listed above must be passed with a C or better. If taken before Fall 2011, the minimum passing grades were C-s in J100 and J201, and a C in J101.

Students who declared "pre-journalism" as their major before Fall 2009 must complete five premajor courses:

  • J101 Grammar for Journalists (P/C- or better. Pre-Fall 2009 students who wait until Fall 2009 or later to take J101 must take the course as J101 Grammar for Communicators and must pass the course with a C or better)
  • J201 Mass Media and Society (C- or better)
  • J202 Information Gathering (C- or better)*
  • J203 Writing for Media (C- or better)*
  • J204 Visual Communication (C- or better)*

*J202, J203, J204 were discontinued with the implementation of the 2009 curriculum. These courses were phased out in the 2009-10 academic year. Students who fall under these admission requirements who have not yet completed the pre-major courses should discuss an appropriate admissions alternate with a journalism advisor.
