There are two journalism general-studies requirements based on courses taken in the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS).
94-credit CAS requirement
All journalism students* must complete at least 94 credits in departments in the CAS. These 94 credits count toward the total 116 credits in areas other than journalism that all journalism students must complete. Courses taken from these departments to satisfy university general-education requirements may simultaneously count toward this major requirement. Be careful—some university general-education courses are taught by departments outside the CAS. Use your Degree Audit Report on DuckWeb to keep track of how many CAS credits you've earned.
Special note for Post-Baccalaureate students: Most post-baccalaureate students complete some portion of their CAS requirements through their first degree. Talk to your journalism adviser to see if you can use courses from your first degree toward the 94 credits listed above or the 56 credits listed below.
56-credit “block” requirements
All journalism students must complete the “block” requirement for the major:
Courses used to satisfy the block requirements must come from the CAS departments listed below. The 56 credits taken for the block requirement simultaneously count toward the total 94-credit CAS requirement. Courses taken from CAS departments to satisfy university general-education requirements may simultaneously count toward the 56-credit block requirement with the following exceptions:
Students in the Robert D. Clark Honors College and students whose first language is not English should talk to their journalism adviser about applying HC and/or AEIS courses toward the CAS and block requirements.
Watch out...
Students who take courses in business, accounting, finance, marketing, management, art history, art, architecture, photography, music, dance or education should know that these courses are not part of the College of Arts and Sciences and cannot count toward the CAS requirement. If you are pursuing a double major or minor in any of these areas (or switched to journalism from one of these majors), work closely with your adviser to make sure your CAS requirement is not neglected.
