The University of Oregon School of Journalism and Communication (SOJC) welcomes 2015 Ruhl Lecturer Karen Miller Pensiero, editor for newsroom standards at The Wall Street Journal.
A 30-year veteran of The WSJ, Pensiero has spent her career upholding journalism standards and ethics in the news. Her day-to-day role includes working with journalists during the reporting process, “final reading” the hardest-hitting articles at The Wall Street Journal, and discussing standards issues with the organization’s journalists around the globe. She ensures the organization’s work meets the most elevated standards of reporting and editing.
Pensiero will give a presentation titled “Maintaining Ethical Standards in the Digital Age.” As many newsrooms are trying to catch up to the new digital model, there is discussion of how journalism ethics are employed to these stories. Pensiero will discuss the new stresses in a “digital first” newsroom, the importance of transparency and the fallacy of changing standards.
“I’m very honored to be giving this year’s Ruhl Lecture,” Pensiero says. “Journalism has a proud past and an important future, and our society depends upon well-trained, ethical journalists. The University of Oregon community should be proud to have a School of Journalism and Communication that places a high importance on teaching ethics and standards.”
The lecture begins at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 12 in the Julie and Rocky Dixon Signature Classroom, Allen Hall 141, followed by a reception.
The event is open to the public, but space is limited. Attendees are asked to RSVP prior to Thursday, Feb. 5 at http://guestli.st/302961.
