Brad Smith

The University of Oregon School of Journalism and Communication (SOJC) welcomes Brad Smith, director of photography for Sports Illustrated (SI), for two presentations. He will speak at the George S. Turnbull Center in Portland on March 5 along with special guest, Rod Mar, team photographer for the Seattle Seahawks and Jon Ferrey, freelance sports photographer. Smith will speak at the main UO campus in Eugene on March 6.

In Portland, Smith will show a reel from the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi and explain how video storytelling was used during the event. He will also take the audience behind-the-scenes of SI with an emphasis on feature and portrait photo shoots. Mar and Ferrey will also present their insights about working in the field.

In Eugene, Smith will talk about how SI has covered the University of Oregon athletic programs the past two years, including the football performance facility makeover, game action, and the recent National Championship game.

Smith has held a wide variety of positions throughout his career. His resume includes photo editor and director of photography at Sports Illustrated Kids before he transitioned to the White House, where he was the assistant director of photography for President Bill Clinton. He’s also worked for The New York Times

Rod Mar is an acclaimed sports photographer whose career spans 25 years. He is currently the team photographer for the Seattle Seahawks with SI and ESPN as clients. Mar’s position with the Seahawks is unique as his access to the players, coaches, and facility is much higher than other NFL photographers. He has photographed every major sporting event in the United States as well as numerous Olympic Games.

Jon Ferrey is an accomplished freelance photographer who produces sports editorial and commercial work. He is published regularly in Sports Illustrated, ESPN The Magazine, Newsweek, and The New York Times. He has extensive experience covering University of Oregon athletic teams.

The Portland presentation will be held on Thursday, March 5 from 5-7 p.m. in the George S. Turnbull Portland Center in conjunction with the SOJC’s Multimedia Journalism and Strategic Communications graduate programs open house and reception. Registration is required at http://guestli.st/311610.

The Eugene event will be held Friday, March 6, from 5:30-8 p.m. in the John E. Jaqua auditorium. Seating is limited and is on a first-come, first-served basis. A reception will immediately follow.
