The Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) recognized five University of Oregon School of Journalism and Communication (SOJC) student projects in its Region 10 Mark of Excellence Awards. SPJ’s Region 10 includes Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington.
The SOJC had three winning entries and two finalists. Winning entries include:
Science and Memory, for Best Digital-Only Student Publication;
Life Below the Line, by Max Thompson, Allen Hall Studios for Best Use of Multimedia;
NW Stories-Sherriff Gil Gilbertson, by Sutton Raphael, Garrett Guinn, Amanda Butt, and Fahmo Mohammed for Television Feature Reporting.
Finalists include Ethos-Fall 2014, by Gordon Friedman, Delaney Pratt, and staff for Best Student Magazine and OR Magazine–Spring 2014 issue, by OR Magazine Staff or Best Digital-Only Student Publication.
The SPJ Mark of Excellence awards honor the best in student journalism. The awards offer categories for print, radio, television and online collegiate journalism. Entries are first judged on the regional level. First place regional winners advance to the national competition and are recognized at SPJ spring conferences.
