Dec. 7 marked the one-year anniversary of the passing of beloved University of Oregon School of Journalism and Communication (SOJC) faculty member Mark Lewis, who died unexpectedly. Lewis was an inspiration for students and faculty alike. As an incredible professional storyteller, Lewis always encouraged students to voice their stories and promoted creativity, presentation and confidence.
In efforts to represent Lewis’ immense impact on the school, the SOJC will be installing a memorial bench in his honor. This bench, to be called The Mark Lewis Story Bench, likely will be placed somewhere on the first floor of Allen Hall.
“We have considered all year the best way to do this, and we thought that this story bench would be the kind of thing Mark would love,” says Lewis’ fellow faculty member and friend, Deborah Morrison.
The bench will serve as a tribute to Lewis’ exceptional contributions to the SOJC and remind those who pass by to remember all that he taught. “I think what the bench will show is his ability to get people to own their story, to love their story. That was so important to him,” says Morrison. “We think that this is the perfect place to sit and consider everything that Mark offered.”
Public donations for the bench can be given online. Please include “Mark Lewis” in the “additional gift notes” box.
