WK-visit-NYC-2015The University of Oregon (UO) School of Journalism and Communication (SOJC) advertising program is having a banner year. Across the board, students and faculty are winning awards, taking home national championships and landing enviable positions.

This year, 47 SOJC advertising students are working in some of the top-tier agencies across the country as interns and new hires.

“We’re so excited about this exceptional class and their success,” says Deborah K. Morrison, Carolyn Chambers Distinguished Professor of Advertising and advertising area director. “To place students all around the country at some of the best agencies out there is testament to our students’ hard work and how well our program is preparing them for this age of ideas and innovation.”

Since joining the SOJC 10 years ago, Morrison has leveraged her many connections in the industry to help connect our best and brightest students with alumni. These connections have served to strength and more than double enrollment in the program in the past five years.

“Because of the NYC Experience 2015 trip and the opportunity to visit 46 agencies and studios, our students achieved a record year for internship and job offers,” says Morrison. “Brandon Mai is now a junior art director at 72 and Sunny NYC. Sarah Sharp is interning at 72 NYC as a writer; Jazo Moises is interning as a strategist there also. Spice Walker, Ryan Hrbek, and Alex Junquera are interning at Rokkan NYC. Jason Murray and Kristin Cubbison are interning at JWT NYC. And three dozen other internships and jobs are a direct result of the trip and connections made there.” Other agencies and media outlets on the summer 2015 internship list include R\GA, BBDO, Code & Theory, BBH, Firstborn, 360i, Subrosa, McKinney, Horizon Media, and Wieden+ Kennedy.

On top of finding choice internship and job placements, many of these advertising students were part of the SOJC Ad Team that took first place in the 2015 National Student Advertising Competition.

The advertising faculty are also having a banner year, collecting award upon award. At the recent Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) conference in San Francisco, Morrison took home the 2015 Advertising Division Distinguished Teaching Award.

The advertising faculty also took home several UO Awards this year. Professor Kim Sheehan won a Faculty Excellence Award. Assistant Professor Christopher Chavez earned the Outstanding Early Career Award. And the 2015 UO Impact and Innovation Award was granted to the Science and Memory project team members—Morrison, and journalism faculty members Mark Blaine, Torsten Kjellstrand, and Dan Morrison.

“We’re so excited about this exceptional class and their success. To place students all around the country at some of the best agencies out there is testament to our students’ hard work and how well our program is preparing them for this age of ideas and innovation.”
