The University of Oregon School of Journalism and Communication (SOJC) Agora Journalism Center partnered with Hack Oregon in March for a 72-hour “Storytelling with Data Build-a-thon” event. The first of its kind, this collaboration brought together journalists, digital developers, designers, civic leaders and students to produce data-driven stories about some of the toughest issues facing Portland and Oregon.
In three days, the teams moved from data collection and compilation to a standing-room only public presentation of projects addressing housing, education, economic innovation, earthquake preparedness and campaign finance.
SOJC associate professor Scott Maier tells the full story in “Turning Data into Civic Tools: Journalists, Coders, Students Collaborate in Portland,” published on MediaShift.
