The 98th commencement ceremony celebrated 650 graduates on Monday, June 16, on the South Knight Library lawn. The 2014 graduates are the largest graduating class in the School’s history, and the first full class to graduate from the newly renovated Allen Hall 3.0.
We were honored to have notable alumna, Sheena Brady ’99, as our commencement speaker who shared valuable and inspiring advice to our graduates:
“Have something to say. You were given a unique voice so none of us would ever have to hear the same story more than once,” said Brady. “Be provacative. Be something. Just don’t add to the noise. Remember that you’re the loudest voice in the room. That you chose to be a spokesperson for this world.”
This year’s ceremony also recognized two outstanding professors. Michael Thoele received the Outstanding Teaching by an Adjunct Award for inspirational teaching and dedication to professional development. Torsten Kjellstrand received the Jonathan Marshall Award for Innovative Teaching in Journalism and Communication.
What made this year’s commencement ceremony even more unforgettable? A torrential downpour, of course! This was the first time in about 25 years that the School experienced other-than-sunny weather during commencement.
The heavy Oregon rain did not stop students, families, and SOJC faculty and staff from celebrating commencement. As the rain poured harder through out the ceremony, the class of 2014 and guests cheered even louder.
A huge “thank you” to all families, friends and spouses who attended this year’s ceremony, and congratulations to the Class of 2014 – We did it!
Important info for my fellow graduates:
Grad Images was the professional photographer on site for the ceremony. They have all graduates’ email addresses, so they will email a link for families to purchase photos. You should receive an email within the next few weeks.
Also, a very limited number of extra programs and diploma covers are available in the SOJC Student Services Office beginning 6/23 if someone needs a copy.
