As a Mellon Fellow at the University of Kansas in 1985, Bill Ryan investigated the use of photo-narrative. He received a Fulbright Fellowship to Singapore for 1996-97 where, along with teaching, he consulted on graphic design and photography and conducted seminars in Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore.

Visual communications and the effectiveness of graphics in print are the focal point of Ryan’s research. His interests include sequential and narrative photography. Currently, he is designing a visual communication program for the University of Wyoming and writing a book on visual literacy.
