Sung Park is co-director of the School of Journalism and Communication’s Multimedia Journalism Master’s program, based at the George S. Turnbull Portland Center.
Park’s interest in teaching was sparked at The University of Texas, where he taught a photojournalism class as an adjunct professor while employed full-time as a staff photographer for the Austin American-Statesman. Park found teaching “addictive” and in 2005, after an invitation to teach at Syracuse University for a year, he quit his job and moved to New York. He ended up teaching at Syracuse for five years. In 2007, Park taught in London through Syracuse University—the same school where he studied photojournalism.
Park developed a love for music while studying classical guitar in college and playing in several rock bands. Moving to Oregon has inspired him to rekindle his interests in fly fishing, skiing, and snowboarding. He also loves to cook but admits he loves to eat even more.
Park offers this advice to his new students: “Keep an open mind to different pathways in establishing yourself as a journalist,” he said. “There are opportunities out there that you may not have thought about.”
