Julia Mahncke joined the SOJC in December 2014. Before coming to Eugene, she was a freelance reporter and editor for the Deutsche Welle, Germany’s international broadcaster, and other media outlets.
She started her career as a radio reporter at a local community radio, when she was a freshman at university. What started with radio reporting, soon turned into hosting shows, managing a student run radio station and adding jobs as a video journalist.
Julia graduated with a “Magister” degree in American Language and Literature, Spanish and Musicology from the University of Bonn, Germany. Parts of the degree were earned during a year at the Universidad de Complutense in Madrid, Spain. The German degree roughly translates to a bachelor’s degree in English, Spanish and Musicology and a master’s in Linguistics and American Culture.
After graduating, she was chosen for a trainee position at a multimedia magazine about Latin America. The job was combined with a two-year training program, covering all things journalism. She has filmed short documentaries in Honduras and San Salvador, launched a podcast, produced audio features for German national radio and taught courses and seminars on radio and online journalism as well as interview techniques.
She loves sound, fiddling around with new technology and interviewing people. Also, going places, where only reporters are allowed to go, is a real treat.
