This 12-15 month program, presented as an option within the M.A./M.S. degree, is designed for those holding bachelor’s degrees who have little or no academic or professional media background and who want to acquire professional skills within an intellectual context. PLEASE NOTE: This program begins summer term, generally the third week in June, not fall.

The Graduate Affairs Committee carefully considers applicants to determine their readiness for the graduate curriculum.

The program begins with a summer of background and preparatory work and is followed by at least three quarters of course work. It culminates in either the creation of a professional project or a substantive internship.

Course Requirements

46 credit graduation requirement 24 of which must be graded 

  • 12 graduate credit summer preparatory experience
  • J562 Reporting II and J583 Journalistic Interview 
  • one 600-level core course (J611)
  • two capstone courses: J563 Story Development and J583 Advanced Story Development
  • a final professional project or internship
