Graduate programs application information and deadlines
January 1: Doctoral program
February 1: Eugene-based master's program in Communication and Society and Journalism. And for Portland-based Strategic Communication.
March 1: Portland-based Multimedia Journalism.
Admission to the graduate program is granted for fall term (summer for professional master's program students in Eugene-based journalism ONLY; please designate summer term as the start date on your application for admission).
Strategic Communications and Multimedia Journalism: we will begin reviewing applications soon after the dates above until all available spots in the program are filled.
Applicants to the master's programs must have received a BS or BA or equivalent prior to their first term of enrollment.
Applicants for the Ph.D. program must have received an MA or MS or equivalent (rare exceptions may be possible) to be considered for admission.
TO APPLY
You will need to complete the online Graduate Application for the University of Oregon SOJC graduate programs. A $50.00 non-refundable fee is collected by the Office of Admissions for the Graduate Admissions Application. Please keep your login credentials (username and password) from the Graduate Admissions Application in a safe place.

There are two sections to the online application. The first section is the general application to the Graduate School; the second details the requirements of the SOJC graduate program application. Information and/or material you will need to complete your application includes:

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS
FOR COMPLETING THE SOJC PORTION OF THE ONLINE APPLICATION
A 750- to 1,000-word essay describing you academic and career goals. The essay should focus on the relationship between your past academic and professional experience and your future plans.
A portfolio, string book, clips, or other evidence of relevant professional work or evidence of scholarly writing and research. Multimedia Journalism applicants should submit copies of their published work. Doctoral applicants should include an abstract and first chapter of their master’s thesis (if you did not write e thesis, then you should submit a recent research paper - no more than five pages long). Communication and Society and Journalism master's applicants should submit a sample of scholarly writing and/or research or evidence of professional work if applicable. Strategic Communication applicants should include professional work such as: writing samples from your current job that focus on persuasive communication that could include advertisements, press releases, brochures, sales letters, presentations, and strategic recommendations.
Identify three persons familiar with your intellectual ability and academic record, and who can provide an estimation of your success as a teacher if you are applying for a Graduate Teaching Fellowship.
The online application requests contact information (name, address, phone number, and email) for a minimum of three and maximum of four recommenders. You may provide each recommender with the ability to respond prior to finishing your application by completing the recommenders' page. Fill in the required information for at least three and press "Submit." An automated email will be sent to each recommender with instructions on how to respond. Once you've entered information and emails have been sent, you will not be able to modify any recommender information. You may return and add a fourth, if desired; however, you may not change any referee information once an email has been sent.

The GRE General Test is required for all applicants; however, we review only the verbal and quantitative portions of the test. The analytical writing score is not required. Low scores will not prevent your application from moving forward for committee consideration.
Official GRE test scores must be self-reported in the online application and the official report of your test scores must also be sent directly to the UO code: 4846.
Applicants for whom English is a second language and who have not earned a bachelor’s degree from an English speaking country must have their TOEFL scores sent directly to the University of Oregon (UO code: 4846). Official TOEFL scores must be self-reported in the online application and the official report of your test scores must also be sent directly to the UO.
The SOJC requires a minimum score of 600 for the paper-based test or 100 for the Internet-based (iBT) version. The IELTS test score will be accepted in lieu of the TOEFL. The minimum score for the IELTS is 7.
All application materials become the property of the

Admission Decisions
