Instructions for the main graduation celebration (including information on parking for the day).

Instructions for the journalism school ceremony:

  • WHAT TO DO BEFORE THE CEREMONY:
    • Get regalia at the Duck Store. It is not required but 99.99% of the students will be wearing regalia. The Duck Store will be open on June 18 if you want to make a last-minute purchase.
    • Take about 10 minutes to do your senior exit survey (undergrads only). A separate announcement will be sent out about this.
  • WHAT TO DO ON JUNE 18, 2012:
    • The journalism ceremony will be held on the large lawn south of Knight Library. This is the lawn between the library and the music school. Seating is first-come, first-served. Again, no tickets are required. Guests are to go directly to the commencement site. The ceremony will start promptly at noon.
    • Between 11:00 a.m. and 11:45 a.m., students need to check in at the procession line-up area south of Gerlinger Annex. (The check-in area will be set up on the road between Gerlinger Annex and Knight Library.)
    • At the check-in area, pick up a name card and get in line. The procession will line up as follows: Standard Bearer, Bagpipe Player, Dean, Faculty, Ph.D. degree candidates, Master's degree candidates, and Bachelor's degree candidates. Ph.D. & Master's candidates wear their tassel on the left. Bachelor's students wear their tassel on the right.
    • The procession will march to the site and a commencement volunteer will direct students to their seats. Remain standing until the Dean asks the graduates to sit.
    • When it's your time to get on stage, you will be guided by a commencement volunteer. Hand your name card to the reader, shake hands with the Dean, get your diploma cover from a faculty marshal and then RETURN TO YOUR SEAT!
  • OTHER THINGS TO KNOW:
    • Professional photographers will be taking photos that day.
    • If you think the name reader will have trouble with your name, you will have an opportunity to write it out phonetically on your name card before you go up on stage (or just quietly pronounce it for him).
    • If you or members of your family need any special accommodations on that day, please let Kathleen Larson know by June 1, 2012. Any requests made after that day will not be accommodated.
    • The J-school ceremony will last about 90 minutes.

STUDENTS:

Please understand this: "Graduating" and "walking in spring" are two different things. Actual diplomas are not handed out during the ceremony.

GRADUATING MEANS GETTING A DIPLOMA. YOU CAN ONLY GET A DIPLOMA IF YOU'VE COMPLETED ALL YOUR REQUIREMENTS. You must apply to graduate. You do this on DuckWeb (Student Menu => Apply for Undergraduate Degree). Applying to graduate means you're telling the university, "I am done with all my classes and requirements. Please award my diploma." You can apply for your degree and graduate any term. A degree will not be awarded if your general education requirements and all declared major and minor requirements are not met.

Deadline to apply for an undergraduate degree:

  • Spring 2012 degree: April 29
  • Summer 2012 (includes "zero week") degree: July 22
  • Fall 2012 degree: October 21

WALKING IN SPRING - i.e. PARTICIPATING IN THE JOURNALISM DEPARTMENTAL CEREMONY The journalism school will allow any senior full major to participate in the journalism commencement ceremony on Monday, June 18, 2012. The journalism commencement program will list the names of every student who has earned a Fall 2011 or a Winter 2012 degree. It will also list the names of every student who has applied for a Spring 2012 and a Summer 2012 degree. (The deadline to apply for a Summer 2012 degree is after commencement. The program will therefore only list all the Summer 2012 degree applicants who applied before the program goes to press.) Names will be listed in the program whether or not the student is planning on attending. Students with a "confidentiality directory release restriction" will need to provide written authorization for their name to be printed in the program. The name list is online and will be updated weekly.

If you are planning to obtain a Fall 2012 degree: You are still welcome to "walk in spring" if you wish. However, you must tell us you want to do so. Again, you only need to fill out this form is you are planning to obtain a Fall 2012 degree.

WALKING IN SPRING - THE UO MAIN GRADUATION CELEBRATION
You are also encouraged to attend the main graduation celebration on June 18, 2012. This event does not have a printed program so signing up to participate is not necessary.
