Professionals

The University of Oregon School of Journalism and Communication and Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) chapter cordially invite you to participate in our annual Portland Paddle event where big ducks come to teach little ducks how to swim in the job market. The event will be held at the George S. Turnbull Portland Center on Friday, February 2, 2018. Sign up now to be a professional advisor for the day to public relations students who need your valuable assistance to practice and perfect their interview skills.

As a professional advisor, you will have the opportunity to give advice to a handful of students on topics that can include, but are not limited to, how to present portfolios, ace an interview, and write an attention-grabbing resume and cover letter. You will also have the chance to assess the caliber of their work and knowledge of the field.

You may choose between a morning interview session (9- 11 a.m.), an afternoon interview session (1-3 p.m.) or both. A complimentary lunch will be available from 11:15 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

We look forward to meeting you at the Portland Paddle. Please submit the 2018 Professional Registration form by Friday, January 12, 2018. We hope this annual event will continue to benefit both your organization and our university.

Students

At the Portland Paddle, you will have the opportunity to meet one-on-one with PR professionals for approximately 20 minutes. You can ask questions about the industry and his/her work within the field and receive professional tips on how to present your portfolio, ace an interview, and write an attention-getting resume and cover letter.

Come prepared with your resume, cover letter, portfolio, and any additional items you may have. Note that no jobs or internships are promised or guaranteed during this event. Please use this time to strengthen your interview skills. 
As this is a formal event, please come dressed professionally. This means no jeans, shorts, polo shirts, etc.

After the student registration deadline, you will be assigned an interview time slot according to the preferences you stated on the online registration form. You may be moved to a different session (morning/afternoon) if we have too many students signed up for a particular time. Please plan on attending the length of the session you are assigned and lunch.

The timing of the two sessions is:

  • Morning session: 9:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
  • Afternoon session: 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

There will be also be a mandatory meeting on Wednesday, January 31, 2018, location TBD for all students who register for this event.

Students: Please note that participation includes one of the swim sessions and lunch.

The Portland Paddle is a very exciting and premiere opportunity for SOJC students. It relies on the valuable participation and time of prominent public relations professionals. Due to these circumstances, we require a 48-hour notice for all cancellations. Failure to comply with this cancellation policy will result in inability to attend the Spring Professional Development Tour and may result in inability to attend future Portland Paddle events.
