Aliya majored in magazine journalism and minored in German. She was promoted to copy-chief of Ethos magazine after working as a writer for two-and-a-half years. In 2015–16, she studied abroad in Germany and wrote guest viewpoints for the Register-Guard about the election, sexual assault, and the refugee situation. She also continued writing for Ethos as a foreign-correspondent, profiling four refugees and traveling to Bosnia to write about the aftermath of the Bosnian War. Themes in her work include human rights issues, overcoming adversity, and international relations. In her spare time, Aliya enjoys playing ukulele, learning languages, and traveling.
