Cooper majored in journalism and minored in theater arts at UO and studied arts and sports journalism in London during summer 2016. At UO, Cooper worked at the Daily Emerald, the student-run newspaper, for two-and-a-half years, moving from opinion columnist to managing editor before managing a staff of 80 students and supervising daily online content and semiweekly newspaper productions as the 2016–17 editor-in-chief. He also oversaw the Emerald investigation of former Oregon tight end Pharaoh Brown, which won a 2016 Investigative Reporters & Editors award for student investigative reporting.
