Seeking out ‘real world’ experience.
Kawika Bernal graduated from the School of Journalism and Communication with a degree in advertising in the spring of 2013.
While attending college, Kawika constantly looked for opportunities to gain ‘real world’ experience, perhaps the most beneficial of which was his internship at Cinco Design in Portland, Oregon, where he interned the summer after his junior year.
“I was given tasks that were challenging yet achievable. This allowed me to learn, progress and ultimately gain experience in a field that I was interested in pursuing.”
“If you show a company or individual that you are passionate about your work and that you work with purpose, people will recognize your efforts.”
Following the internship, he began to look for jobs to take on after graduation–visiting job fairs, contacting professionals and asking friends for leads on advertising positions. “I basically searched from January until I was offered a position

in May. I was very fortunate that my internship turned into a job.”
Kawika was offered a job at the same Cinco Design studio in Portland, where he now works full-time as an advertising project coordinator on the product design team– managing project schedules, project budgets and coordinating resources.
He advises upcoming SOJC graduates to never underestimate the value of planning ahead and being eager. “If you show a company or individual that you are passionate about your work and that you work with purpose, people will recognize your efforts. At the very least this turns into a strong recommendation and hopefully it turns into another opportunity.”
